Subway Locates to Novotel

There are 28,000 fully franchised Subway Restaurants in 80 countries, with approximately 70 new stores opening each week around the globe.

And back on 26 April this year, one of those new stores opened in Sydney Olympic Park under the Novotel Hotel.

'This is now a Flagship Store and it represents the positive future of our global brand,' said Managing Director, Mr Robert Poynting, who was the driving force in the four years of negotiations with the Novotel to finalise the deal.

The Novotel literally created a new, suitable space, where none previously existed, after the current location of Gloria Jeans was deemed unsuitable for a Subway operation.

"We identified the need for healthy, low cost products for customers and the brand has a broad range. This view was supported whole-heartedly by the Novotel. This location is a departure from the norm where we are usually located in shopping centres and strip shopping areas," said Mr Poynting.

"The decision to move to the Park has already paid dividends for Subway with turnover when events are on being very strong".

"Subway Novotel has 6 full-time staff with a team of 15 casuals to call on, to handle the busy event days".

"In the future we will continue to examines ways to grow the brand with possible Kiosks in differents parts of the park when events are on" concluded Poynting.

But in the meantime Subway is building its clientele from tourists, construction workers to office staff and hoping soon to venture into Office Catering. Food for thought for on-site offices!

2007 WESTERN SYDNEY INDUSTRY AWARDS

Sydney Olympic Park businesses star in 2007 Western Sydney Industry Award winners

The biggest solar electricity systems manufacturer in the southern hemisphere and an innovative producer of water recycling technologies were among 21 winners of the 2007 Western Sydney Industry Awards.

NSW Minister for Western Sydney Barbara Perry revealed the winners and paid tribute to Western Sydney's entrepreneurs who generated over $80 billion in economic output last year.

Ms Perry announced the winning companies at the Awards Gala night at Sydney Olympic Park on Friday 18 May to over 700 of the region's business leaders and success stories, with special guest, NSW Premier Morris Iemma.

"Environmental issues like climate change and drought have sparked increasing business activity for companies specialising in the design and manufacture of sustainable technologies," Ms Perry said.

"In Australia we have some of the most innovative environmental technologies available world-wide and many of these are being developed and exported from Western Sydney."

Judges saw the light, rewarding a commitment to converting Australia to clean energy, by naming BP Solar at Sydney Olympic Park the coveted Global Excellence Award winner for a large business, Ms Perry said.

Peregrine Semiconductor Australia Pty Ltd, also located at Sydney Olympic Park was the Judges' Choice as best manufacturer.

"The Western Sydney Industry Awards show the diversity and strength of the region's business community and its importance to the state and national economies.

"Western Sydney is now Australia's third largest regional economy after Central Sydney and South East Queensland. The calibre of businesses entering the Awards each year clearly shows why Western Sydney continues to punch above its weight.

The Western Sydney Industry Awards are an initiative of the NSW Government's Office of the Minister for Western Sydney, in partnership with the Greater Western Sydney Economic Development Board and the NSW Department of State and Regional Development.

Revamped Badgery Pavilion launches in Style

Sydney Showground officially launched its recently refurbished Badgery Pavilion on 26 July when NSW Premier Morris Iemma and 300 business and government representatives gathered at the venue. The occasion was the 2007 State of the Region Address for Western Sydney, presented by the Western Sydney Business Connection.

Boasting a $1 million refurbishment, the spacious 2540 square-metre marquee-style venue is now complete with new carpet, furnishings, and state-of-the-art air-conditioning. It was the ideal platform for the Premier to present key government strategies and policies affecting business in Western Sydney- including the NSW Metro Strategy, infrastructure projects, roads, and sustainability.

Sydney Showground's recent infrastructure injection to the precinct, including the Badgery Pavilion's million dollar facelift, echoed the strong current and forecasted economic growth for all of Western Sydney, as discussed at the State of Region Address.

'Western Sydney is the third largest economy in Australia and Sydney Showground is continuously investing in infrastructure to meet the steady growth of the area,'said Kim-Laura Brown, General Manager, Sydney Showground.

'The Badgery Pavilion upgrade is one of many steps Sydney Showground is taking to ensure businesses in the region have access to more than 20 world-class event venues and facilities.'

Among the superior facilities offered at the Badgery Pavilion is Sydney Showground's award-winning catering service, which recently won the Meetings & Events Australia (MEA) National Catering/Banqueting Award.

About the Badgery Pavilion

The Badgery Pavilion was named in recognition of the Badgery family, who gave more than 150 years of service to the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS), a not for profit organisation that operates Sydney Showground. The Badgery family descends from James Badgery, a free settler who arrived in Sydney in 1799. Brian Badgery became a Councillor of the RAS in 1991, and is the eighth member of the Badgery family to hold this position. Almost continuously since 1888, a member of the Badgery family has had a seat on the Council, striving towards the RAS objective to raise standards of agriculture in NSW and Australia.

Four Honoured with Induction to Sporting Hall of Champions

Four New South Wales sportspeople were honoured in a ceremony on 16 July with induction into the Hall of Champions.

The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham West, said the four new Champions were Ken Wark (hockey), Petria Thomas CAM (swimming), Debbie Watson CAM (water polo) and Darren Mercer CAM (surf lifesaving).

"These four join an impressive line-up of famous Australian sports-people going back to 1876. This list includes names such as Don Bradman, Daily Messenger and Evonne Goolagong-Cawley,"Mr West said.

Mr West also officially opened the Hall of Legends (Sydney Olympic Park's newest function space) with the assistance of four living legends, Reg Gasnier, Shane Gould, Murray Rose and Heather McKay.

"The Hall of Legends is an initiative of the State Sports Centre Trust which recognises 14 of the greatest names in Australian sport, all of them from New South Wales,"he said.

"The feats of each of these Legends are already celebrated in the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame in Melbourne and it is entirely appropriate that they are now each recognised in this way in their home State."

ACPE Graduation Ceremony

On Friday, 27 July, around 250 students from the Australian College of Physical Education graduated at a ceremony in the Hall of Legends at the Sports centre in the 90th year of the college's illustrious history.

The retirement of long-standing staff member and CEO Max Hector was formally announced on the night.

Paul Cave, the Chairman of BridgeClimb Sydney gave an inspiring occasional address and brought along Captain Francis de Groot's sword which he used to prematurely cut the ribbon at the official opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge 75 years ago.

Mr Cave told of how he employed someone full time for two years to find the sword. It was tracked down in Ireland and is currently insured for around $1 million. It made an historic outing at the ACPE Graduation night.

Founder of ACPE and fencer himself, Mr Frank Stuart, is said to have taught de Groot his fencing skills.
