Wetland conference at Sydney Olympic Park

Leading Australian ecologists will gather at Sydney Olympic Park in early June to discuss strategies for protecting the nation's wetlands.

CEO Alan Marsh said Sydney Olympic Park Authority was proud to host - the 7th annual Wetland Education & Training (WET) Program on 5 and 6 June: Climate Change, Sea Level Rise and Wetland Adaptation.

'Sydney Olympic Park Authority is responsible for protecting the 175 hectares of fresh and saltwater wetlands within our boundaries, including the only remaining estuarine wetland on the Parramatta River," Mr Marsh said.

"By engaging with academics and professionals in the area of wetlands management, and encouraging the public to increase their knowledge and understanding of this important subject, we hope to play a part in protecting these precious natural resources for generations to come."

Sydney Olympic Park Authority Wetlands Manager Dr Swapan Paul said the two-day WET Program would include theory and practical fieldwork, and had been tailored to be of interest to both experts and amateurs alike.

"The first day of the WET Program will provide an important forum for academics, professionals and amateurs to discuss the latest research on protecting Australia's wetlands from the impacts of global warming and rising sea levels," Dr Paul said.

"The second day will give participants the opportunity to take part in practical fieldwork within Sydney Olympic Park's extensive fresh and saltwater wetlands."

Highlights of the WET Program include:
- Professor Max Finlayson, Charles Stuart University - How vulnerable are Australian wetlands to climate change and sea level rise?
- Emeritus Professor Colin Field, University of Technology, Sydney - What are the effects of climate change and sea level rise to coastal salt marshes?
- Professor Neil Saintilan, NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change - Evidence of Environment and Climate Change.
- Dr Mark Conlon, NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change - How can climate change policies, programs and measures in wetlands be better integrated and coordinated?

For more information or to register for the workshop call 9714 7888 or email wetworkshop@sopa.nsw.gov.au

MEMBER NEWS

Historic partnership begins between Special Olympics Australia and Law Enforcement Officers

On 1st & 2nd May 2008, the start of a National partnership between Special Olympics Australia and Law Enforcement Torch Run began, a truly historic moment.

The inaugural Australian National Conference for the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) was formed to discuss the set up of Law Enforcement Committees in every state across Australia. These committees will have the objective of raising funds and helping with the awareness and ceremonies at all Games for Special Olympics Australia.

The Conference was opened by NSW Commissioner Andrew Scipione who has been a major supporter of Special Olympics for many years and the keynote speaker for the conference was Major Kurt Kendro, from the Honolulu Police Department, Hawaii.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run was initiated in 1981 by the Chief of Police, Richard La Munyon of Wichita, Kansas as a means of assisting the local Special Olympics Program and engaging his officers with the local community.

A quarter of a century later, Law Enforcement Torch Run has expanded into a world-wide movement with more than 85,000 police officers in 120 LETR Programs across 55 countries being actively involved in Torch run. The fundraising efforts of those Law Enforcement Programs have resulted in more than $250 million. In the past year alone Law Enforcement Torch Run Programs have raised over $30million for Special Olympics.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run (NSW) was formed in 2006 by a number of serving and retired NSW police officers following the success of a Torch Run from Sydney to the Gold Coast as a lead up to the Special Olympics National Games. In the past year more than $50,000 has been raised by LETR (NSW). I'm sure we speak on behalf of every region and every state when we say "SO, bring it on!"

We look forward in working together and growing our national partnership. SO, One team working together!

If you would like more information on Special Olympics Australia please visit the website www.specialolympics.com.au or contact the National Office info@specialolympics.com.au 02 8116 9833

They currently have approximately 24 tenants within their properties, with leases ranging in size from 66m2 to 9,000m2.

An indication of the attractiveness of the Park is evidenced by the lease renewal of all tenants to date for a further term once their current leases expired.

GPT has most recently completed Quad 4 which is the final stage of the 22,500m2 Quad Development (Quads 1,2, 3, & 4). Quad 4 was the first speculative office building in NSW to achieve a 5 Star Green Star Design - representing Australian excellence in environmental sustainable design. The office accommodation with the Quad development has been highly sought after for a variety of tenant profiles is 100% leased and includes a childcare centre.

GPT has four future redevelopment sites within the Park that are:

- 7 Parkview Drive
- 7 Figtree Drive
- 5 Figtree Drive
- 8 Herb Elliot Avenue

Their next redevelopment site will be 7 Parkview Drive. The development will be a staged development with the first stage being a new commercial office building. They expect to commence the first stage of the redevelopment in Q1 in 2009 and, like Quad 4, the development will set a new benchmark for business park office accommodation.
