Legend meets Stars
Bulldogs legend Terry Lamb surprised special fan Piula Masaniai at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre on Friday October 10th during the Annual MSSA Reach for the Stars Disability Athletics Carnival.
The Bulldogs were fortunate enough to meet 23 year old Piula and his friends from the Eurella Community Services Day Program during one of the largest athletics carnival in Australia for people with physical and intellectual disabilities.
The event gives participants like Piula, who has Cerebral Palsy / Quadriplegia along with a mild Intellectual disability, the rare opportunity to perform at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. This also helps build their self esteem in a safe and supportive environment. Being a mad Bulldogs supporter Piula was thrilled when Terry took time out to meet him along with his friends from Eurella Community Services Day Programs, participating in the annual event.
Whilst there were many first and second place getters amongst the Eurella group at the event,Terry’s visit definitely made their day just that little bit more special.

ACPE Supports Breakfast with the Stars
On the 30th October the State Sports Centre was alive with the sound of over 950 school girls having breakfast in the annual Womensport NSW Breakfast with the Stars.
This year saw ACPE support for the event grow significantly to past years with a large number of ACPE students engaging with the school girls on topics around sport, leadership and healthy living.
The Associate Dean of ACPE, Angelee Boyd spoke to the large audience about the importance participation in physical activity and its positive impacts on healthy lifestyle.
‘This is particularly important given the statistics are telling us from thirteen years of age girls participation in physical activity is falling quite quickly, said Ms Boyd.
One of the highlights for the College supporting this event was the number of ACPE graduates who now working as Physical Education teachers in high schools had brought their own school students to the event.
“The Womensport NSW breakfast promotes lifelong participation in sport and a healthy approach to living, presented us with an excellent opportunity for the College students to engage with the high school students” said ACPE Marketing Director Stuart Ayres.
The school students at the breakfast had direct access to a plethora of sports stars for multitude different sports headed by Olympic Gold Medalist Kerrie Pottharst and swimming sensation Elka Graham.
ACPE looks forward to continuing its support of the event in the years to come.
Brave Bulldogs give the gift of life
In support of a worth cause,Bulldogs staff recently took on the simple, yet rewarding experience, of donating blood at the Red Cross Blood Donor van at Sydney Showground on Thursday October 30.
Bulldogs staff members Steve McCullagh, Terrence Trujillo, Garry Carden, Saree Boutros and Amanda Grant each donated around 400ml of blood resulting in 15 healthier receipients in the community. Why giving blood is so special: • 21,000 blood donations needed nationally each week • 800 donations are needed weekly at Clarence Street Donor Centre • Blood is needed every day of every month of every year • Every blood donation helps save 3 lives • 1 in 3 people will need blood or blood products during their life • Only 1 in 30 people currently donate • Donors can give blood every 3 months

The Monster BMX Track is a free, open-air facility that makes the increasingly popular sport of BMX available to all – from occasional riders to the elite.
The track was jointly funded by the Federal Government, the NSW State Government and Auburn Council.
Minister Keneally also officially launched the Sydney Olympic Park Community Learn to Ride Program – a joint initiative of Sydney Olympic Park Authority, Auburn Council and the NSW Police Bicycle Patrol Unit.
A touch of 'Spring Cycle' in the Park
This year’s City of Sydney Spring Cycle (supported by Sydney Olympic Park Authority) raised over $65,000 for MS Australia. A number of SOPA employees and Lifestyle members participated in this year's ride which ended in The Overflow. “On behalf of MS Australia and people affected by MS, your support means that we can continue a wide range of services to people with MS and support for their carers. Thank you for caring and for your support”, said Kerry Hill, Events Community Fundraising Project Manager MS Australia.

NEW FACES
New Program Development Officer at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre's
Michelle Olsson recently joined the State Sports Centre Trust as their Program Development Officer. With a distinguished background as a gymnast, Michelle spent the last ten years teaching gymnastics in schools and running the very successful Kinderoo Kindy Gym program at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre. Michelle’s marketing qualifications and experience in the development and management of a number of sports programs made her a natural fit for the new position, which will see her organising a wide range of participation activities based in Trust’s venues. ‘My role with the Trust is to deliver quality programs that will introduce Sydney Olympic Park workers and families to the Sports Centre, Sports Halls and Hockey Centre. I believe sport and recreation is a vital part of life and I am committed to motivating our community to be more involved in the diverse range of fitness, well being and sporting opportunities that we can offer.’ Michelle’s research shows that the Sydney Olympic Park Precinct offers a vast amount of opportunities to engage residents and employees in health, fitness and sporting programs. She plans to launch a suite of sports based birthday party options early in 2009, with lunchtime Pilates classes, women’s self defence, a table tennis competition and a badminton skills program currently under development. Michelle can be contacted on 9763 0175
Commonwealth Bank's Beyond Our Buildings Expo (BOB)
What better way to show new and soon-to-relocate Commonwealth Bank staff what a unique precinct Sydney Olympic Park is than to bring a sample of what's on offer into the bank itself.
Looking ‘beyond our buildings’ (BOB) to improve work/life balance was the theme of a recent mini-business expo in the atrium of 10 Dawn Fraser Avenue.
On Wednesday 22 October over 600 employees checked out the Exhibitors who included the ‘Lifestyle’ program, Rhodes Shopping Centre, Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre, Parklands Foundation, Kids Company – Parkview, Sydney Olympic Park Golf Centre, Sporting Spectrum, My Spare Seat, Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, Sydney Olympic Park Archery Centre, and Sydney Sports Medicine Centre.
A charity barbeque on the day also raised money for breast cancer research.
The event was so successful that a second ‘BOB’ will be held on Wednesday 25 February. The number of exhibitors at this event is close to capacity. However, if you feel your business may have something very exciting to offer to the Commonwealth Bank’s employees, please contact Cathy Johnston – johnstcm@cba.com.au.

CHANGING PARK PROFILE
Watpac's new office development at Sydney Olympic Park
Watpac Property has commenced its latest office development at 8 Australia Avenue, Sydney Olympic Park, demonstrating its continuing confidence in the Australian property market.
Due for completion in November 2009, the project, known as 8 Australia, will feature 6,600m2 of net lettable floor space over six levels, along with basement car parking.
The ground floor level provides 665m2 of retail space, while the upper levels offer floor space between 1,106m2 and 1,223m2.On completion, 8 Australia will provide an opportunity for tenants to secure high-quality A-grade space in Sydney Olympic Park, at a time of limited forecast supply.
The development is immediately opposite the new 57,000m2 Commonwealth Bank of Australia office campus and is a short walk from the Sydney Olympic Park Rail Station.
The building has also been registered for a Green Star Office Design rating with the Green Building Council of Australia.
Greg Kempton, Watpac’s Managing Director, said 8 Australia was a rare and limited opportunity for businesses looking to lease A-grade quality office space in the rapidly emerging office campus precinct at Sydney Olympic Park.
“Excellent access is available to many of the facilities that made the 2000 Olympics such a success, and also to the growing residential areas of western Sydney, Parramatta, and the Sydney metropolitan region,” Mr Kempton said.
“Watpac is clearly committed to the New South Wales development and investment market and is confident about the strength of the growing commercial office market in Sydney Olympic Park.
“We are confident that 8 Australia will make a significant contribution to the long-term success of Sydney Olympic Park’s commercial precinct and we value and appreciate our relationship with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority.
“Our first commercial project at Sydney Olympic Park was The Zone, a seven-storey building for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and we are now looking forward to completing our second, 8 Australia, towards the end of next year.”
Sydney Olympic Park’s commercial vacancy factor is currently less than one per cent, indicating strong underlying demand. This reflects the positive working environment including ease of access to and from the workplace, retail and sporting facilities, parks, gardens, a golf driving range, and cycling track.
GJS Property,a member of the Sydney Olympic Park Business Association, is leasing the property on behalf of Watpac Property. For further information please contact Jason Wright of GJS Property on 9748 4644 or visit www.8australia.com.

Medibank International
World No.1 continues tradition at Medibank International Sydney. For the second consecutive year, and the sixth time this century, the holder of the prestigious year-end world No.1 ranking is playing the rich and celebrated Medibank International Sydney, the biggest tournament in the Australian Open Series.
The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour recently announced that Jelena Jankovic will end the 2008 season as the world’s No. 1 player. The Serb has just one more tournament left this year, next week’s season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha. Whatever the outcome, she has too great a lead with her ranking points to be overtaken. “The Medibank International Sydney congratulates Jelena on achieving such a significant milestone in her career, and we look forward to welcoming her back to Sydney,” Tournament Director Craig Watson said today. “Jelena was a finalist at the Medibank International Sydney in 2007, and in 2009 the tournament is her only appearance at an official event in the lead-up to the Australian Open. “It has been a truly amazing year for me. Winning four Sony Ericsson WTA Tour titles, over 60 matches and to make it to two semi finals and a final in the Grand Slams of 2008 is a dream come true. I worked really hard this year and to finish number one is where I want to be and where I hope to stay.” Jankovic is one of only eight women to hold the prestigious year-end world number one ranking since the computer rankings were created in 1975. She joins Justine Henin, Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert with that honour and every one of these ladies has played at the Medibank International. Interestingly, from 2000 every time the reigning year-end world number one has played the Medibank International Sydney, they have gone on to win the title.
IMGA gives thumbs up to Sydney 2009 World Masters Games
Head of international body confident harbour city is on track to stage best-ever edition of world’s largest multi-sport event this time next year.
The International Masters Games Association recently gave its official stamp of approval to the 2009 World Masters Games at the end of its Sydney visit, with the head of the international body confident that the harbour city is on track to stage the best-ever edition of world’s largest multi-sport event this time next year.
“Sydney has a great track record for hosting major international events, particularly those of a sporting nature. After spending time inspecting preparations for the 2009 World Masters Games, I’m confident this sports-mad city will take the world’s largest multi-sport event to a whole new level,” said IMGA President Kai Holm, one of five International Olympic Committee members on the IMGA’s 12-person board.
The visit to Sydney of the IMGA Board of Governors coincides with 12 months to go until the 2009 World Masters Games, with organisers of the event expecting 25,000 people from more than 100 countries to compete across 28 sports at upwards of 70 venues, including many Olympic sites, from 10-18 October next year.
For Margy Osmond, Chair of the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games, the IMGA’s endorsement is recognition of the city’s hard work over the four years since it beat bids from Copenhagen and Japan’s Shiga Prefecture to win the right to stage the event that attracts up to three times more competitors than the Olympic Games.
“There’s no place in the world like Sydney for staging major international events. The 2009 World Masters Games are the next big event on the city’s calendar and they’ll be every bit as successful as the 2000 Olympic Games, Rugby World Cup 2003 and World Youth Day 2008 were in recent times,” Mrs Osmond said.
Open to sports-loving people of all abilities and most ages, the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games are all about being fit, fun and forever young. Registrations for competitors and volunteers are open now at www.2009worldmasters.com.

WHAT'S NEW
Jemena to meet vital infrastructure challenges of 21st Century
Alinta LGA Ltd, the energy and water infrastructure company, adopted Jemena Ltd as its new brand name on 4 August 2008.
The brand name represents a new beginning for a company renowned for its high-quality gas, water and electricity infrastructure and contracted works services.
Jemena is an aboriginal word meaning to hear, to listen and to think. It was chosen because it represents how the company does business and because of the company's focus on delivering the best services.
The new name helps Jemena to:
-hear what its staff, its customers, its owners and communities are saying -listen to their needs with open and active minds -think of innovative, creative and cost-effective ways to deliver the very best solutions
The new brand, Jemena, represents the organisation's unique ability as an asset owner, manager, developer and service provider as well as its determination to meet the vital infrastructure challenges of the 21st Century.
Jemena's new tagline - Vital Service, Vital Planet - reflects the vital services it provides to millions of Australians and its role in doing everything it can to minimise its impact on the environment.
While the company is known for its work in operating large gas and electricity networks in the eastern states - Jemena manages over $8 billion worth of gas and electricity assets, including Melbourne’s United Energy and Multinet Gas distribution networks; Sydney’s Jemena Gas Networks; the ActewAGL Gas and Electricity Networks in the ACT; and, the Eastern and Queensland Gas Pipelines - it is also investigating alternative energy solutions to meet an increasing demand for sustainable infrastructure solutions.
As an example of this, Jemena recently achieved a major milestone in its brief history with the formal agreement to build the first privately-owned recycled water scheme in Australia. Sydney Water signed the contract for a $100 million recycled water scheme with AquaNet, which has been established as Jemena's water arm, on 11 August - just one week after the Jemena brand was born.
AquaNet will be distributing recycled water produced by a plant that will be built, owned and operated by Veolia Water Australia. Jemena will be responsible for designing, building, owning and operating a network that will link the plant to industries that will purchase the recycled water. The network will comprise two pump stations and three reservoirs connected by 20 kilometres of pipeline. A portion of this network will use Jemena's existing, isolated gas main network to deliver the recycled water.
While the scheme will initially supply 4.3 billion litres of recycled water a year for industries in Rosehill and Smithfield, AquaNet will expand the network and boost this by an additional 3 billion litres of recycled water a year for industries in Westmead, Parramatta, Wetherill Park, Fairfield and Liverpool.

Additional rail services on the right track
RailCorp recently advised that six new weekday morning services had been introduced between Olympic Park and Lidcombe. These services will leave Sydney Olympic Park for Lidcombe at 5.50am, 6.10am and 6.30am and Lidcombe to Olympic Park at 5.50am, 6.10am and 6.30am RailCorp are investigating strengthening the Olympic Park service from a 20-minute frequency to a 10-minute frequency (peak hours).
