SOPBiz # 24 MARCH 2009

FROM THE CEOS DESK

This month's edition of SOPBiz sees the first of what will be monthly updates on the upcoming Sydney 400, V8 Supercars race with a profile of the Homebush Motor Racing Authority (HMRA).

Don't forget to put Tuesday, 7 April, Sydney Showground in your diary for the first networking breakfast of the year. In addition to getting a unique behind-the-scenes insight in the staging of one of the largest events in Australia only days before the Show begins, there will also be a briefing about 'Sustainability Advantage' - a partnership program which Park businesses should be aware of in this current climate.

You'll receive your invitation this week and as per the membership package entitlements Platinum members receive 10 tickets, Gold Members, four and Silver members two passes. Bronze and Affiliate Members can purchase tickets at the members' discounted price, compared to a higher non-member price.

The Park continues to be a leader in events and facilities - Acer Arena's recent Top Gear shows topped 77,000 in ticket sales, with 25% of patrons coming from inter-state. So the show was not only good for Acer Arena and the Park, but Sydney generally.

With ANZ Stadium celebrating its 10th birthday this year, we can also look forward to more announcements from them throughout the year.

To the many League supporters in the Park, it's not long now and Monday morning coffee discussions will be around your respective team's performances over the weekend. Keep checking the Lifestyle website for NRL tickets competitions and offers during the season. May the best team (as long as it's the Bronocs) win!

SYDNEY 400

Introducing the Homebush Motor Racing Authority

The NSW Government enacted the Homebush Motor Racing (Sydney 400) Act 2008 to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of government services for the “Sydney 400” V8 Supercars Event. The Homebush Motor Racing Authority (HMRA) was established under that Act and it’s function is to co-ordinate and assist in the delivery of Government services associated with the event.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Authority is Mr Bryan Hardman.Bryan is not a new face to the businesses at Sydney Olympic Park. In fact, Bryan first started at the Olympics site back in 1996 when he was the Director Building Approvals with the former Olympic Co-ordination Authority.

In this role Bryan issued the regulatory Building Approvals for all the venues and infrastructure associated with the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This included the then Stadium Australia, Sydney Superdome, RAS buildings, Novotel Hotel and many other venues. He was also responsible for the 2000 dwellings and residential flat units constructed for the Athletes Village, now known as Newington.

After the Olympics, Bryan remained on with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority in a senior management position, and as part of the executive group worked towards the re-development of the Park into a vibrant, exemplar model of place-making to form a unique integrated township. As such, Bryan was involved with the early designs of the “green“ credentials of the newer CBA buildings, Quad 4 development and Pullman Hotel as well as a host of other commercial buildings to ensure a high standard of urban design and best practice environmental management.

More recently, Bryan held an executive position within the World Youth Day Co-ordination Authority which was tasked with the co-ordination and provision of Government services to support the World Youth Day event and the visit to Sydney by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.

Bryan is acutely aware of the issues of Sydney Olympic Park relating to development and challenges posed by major events to existing stakeholders.

Through his past involvement with the Park, Bryan was able to form strong working alliances and friendships with the vast majority of SOP business and event stakeholders. Bryan will continue to maintain those strong links with all relevant stakeholders in respect to the preparations and management of the proposed first Sydney 400 motorcar racing event in December 2009 at the Park.

Mr Chris Bastic has also been recently appointed as the General Manager Stakeholder Relations for the HMRA.

Chris has had extensive experience in community relations spent 21 years as a Councillor for Randwick City Council from 1987 till 2008 where he was Mayor for 4 years.

Sydney Olympic Park has also featured in Chris’s career path where he was Manager, Pre-games training, from 1996 till 2000 for Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympics Games.

Chris went on to work as the Executive Officer for the NSW Major Events Board after the Sydney 2000 Olympics before taking up the position in 2005 as General Manager Stakeholder Relations for the World Youth Day Co-ordination Authority.

Chris will be working with all SOP stakeholders to inform, provide reassurance manage expectations and help find solutions to issues as they arise.

It is expected that Chris will be in the Park on a weekly basis and will be visiting all stakeholders. In the meantime Chris can be contacted on 9338 6637 or 0418 771 552 if you wish to discuss any matters with him. Pictured is Mr Bryan Hardman (left) and Mr Chris Bastic (right)

SOPBA NEW FACES

The Park welcomes the first florist - Lulu Flora

One of the budding new businesses in Sydney Olympic Park has certainly added a touch of colour and beauty to the shop fronts. Lulu Flora, located at the Australia Avenue end of Dawn Fraser Avenue, opened its doors on 2nd February.

The name ‘Lulu Flora” was inspired by the Greek background of owner Sevi Anastasiou.  ‘Lulu’ comes from the Greek word for ‘flower’.

Lulu Flora not only provides floral arrangements, but a wide range of gifts including wine, champagne, toiletries, baby products and homewares.

With 15 years experience as a florist and the past five years tutoring in floral art for Sydney Community Colleges, Sevi is also offering recreational floral art classes in addition to flowers, plants and gifts.

Prior to  tutoring and raising her 14 month and four year old boys, Sevi owned a florist in Petersham.

“ When I was ready to leave tutoring and open another florist I felt moving to Sydney Olympic Park was a great opportunity to build a good business in a growing area. There also wasn’t a florist nearby. However getting people to be aware that there is now a florist in the park is my first challenge,” said Sevi.

Every business and most employees in the Park buy flowers from time to time. Help support another new business by checking out the services and prices on offer through Lulu Flora. This is best achieved by checking out the shop first hand.

Lulu Flora is located at Shop 1, 2 Dawn Fraser Avenue. Telephone: 97466630, email: info@luluflora.com.au or visit their website: www.luluflora.com.au. Lifestyle members get a 15% discount on flowers and plants on presentation of their Membership card.

Get trucking with Park Poetry Project

The Red Room Company and the Sydney Olympic Park Authority are seeking your toy trucks to use in a special public hunt and exhibition at Sydney Olympic Park.

Red Room and the Authority have teamed up to produce DUST POEMS, a celebration of new Australian poetry from the road. With the additional support of The Deloitte Foundation, Bigway, Watpac and Billbergia, six poems commissioned for the project will be writ large on construction sites, car parks and other unusual spots within the Olympic Park site, from March to June 2009.

The launch of the project on March 21st, is anticipated to attract families to the Park for a tour of the sites featuring your trucks and the Dust poems. We’re calling on the public, including communities involved with the project, to drop off their toy vehicles.

Following the project, the toys will be donated to charities with an interest in the welfare of greater Sydney’s underprivileged children. You can engrave or emblazon your mini vehicle – no larger than the palm of your hand – with identification, then deposit it at:
Truck Deposit Box, Visitor Centre, Murray Rose Drive, Sydney Olympic Park

The Truck Deposit Box is also an audio installation where you can listen to the Dust poets read their poems, speak about their experiences on the road, and John Laws’ advertisements for the project.

See http://www.dustpoems.com for more about this original, exciting project that shares the great Australian road story with greater Sydney, and opens the Olympic Park landscape to adventure and imagination. Please get onboard!

SYDNEY 2009 WORLD MASTERS GAMES

Seven months out and counting down

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games not only left a legacy of top class venues in the harbour city but also positioned Sydney as a premier location for major sporting events.

Just four years after the Olympics, NSW won the bid to host the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games – an event which draws over 25,000 competitors world-wide.

Back in 2004, faced with staging the world’s biggest multi-sport event, the small team operating out of the NSW Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation had a lot of work ahead of them.

As the somewhat lonely team meetings continued to grow, the Committee moved to Sydney Olympic Park to spread its wings and be at the centre of Sydney’s sporting community.

Eight months out from the event, the Committee is now in the final stages of recruiting full-time staff, with the ultimate office head count set to reach 44 by October.

“It is very exciting to see the Organising Committee grow from a handful of people to an organisation that now has over 30 people,” CEO Shane O’Leary said.

O’Leary, who commenced as the Games CEO in 2006 is no stranger to the event, having been the Group Manager of Sports and Venues at the 2002 Games in Melbourne.

“Not only are we well and truly in the run up to the Games,” O’Leary said, “but the closing date for registrations [July 31] is looming large.”

“Having the team grow enables us to really start implementing our plans and step up our readiness for Games time.”

Crucial to the success of the nine-day sport event will also be 6,000 volunteers who will come from far and wide to lend a hand.

Outside of the Sydney Olympic Park office, the Games team continues.

Responsible for advising SWMGOC and the NSW Minister for Tourism Jodi McKay on all aspects of the planning and staging of the event is the Games Advisory Committee.

Chair of the Committee is Margy Osmond, Chief Executive Officer of the National Retailers Association. Working with Margy to ensure a smooth running event are some well-known figureheads in both sporting and business arenas including Phil Coles AM, Bob Elphinston OAM, Michelle Ford-Eriksson MBE, Chris Jordan AO, John Moore and David Brettell.

Adam Spencer strapping on football boots for 2009 World Masters Games

ABC Local Radio presenter Adam Spencer is strapping on his football boots for the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games – and he wants to eat his rivals for breakfast.

Mr Spencer is entering a football team in October’s seventh edition of the world’s largest multi-sport event, of which ABC Local Radio is the official radio partner.

To enter the Games people need only meet their sport’s minimum age, which ranges between 25 and 35. The football competition is open to people aged 30 and over.

Mr Spencer, who will recruit football players from listeners to his high-rating ABC Local Radio breakfast show, is looking forward to competing on the world stage.

“We can’t all be world champions but we sure as hell can have a shot at the world championship. Bring on the World Masters Games in Sydney,” Mr Spencer said.

Already Mr Spencer has made his first backroom appointment, with well known football personality Andy Harper agreeing to act as his team’s star mentor.

Mr Harper, who made 321 National Soccer League appearances, played football at the 2002 Games and describes it as one of the best experiences of his life.

“There’s something ever so special about this event. I loved every minute of the 2002 Games and I can’t wait for the 2009 Games to kick off,” Mr Harper said.
