FAREWELL TO A WELL KNOWN PARK IDENTITY

Ken Edwards leaves after 13 years of service

After 13 years at the helm, ANZ Stadium Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ken Edwards, will leave the Stadium after 13 years on July 1. Deputy CEO Daryl Kerry has been announced as Edwards’ replacement.

Recent research conducted by University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Centre for Olympic Studies identified ANZ Stadium as the most successful post-Olympic stadium ever.

“Unlike other stadia in Sydney and elsewhere in Australia, ANZ Stadium has been built, is owned and operated by the private sector and does not receive any government funding,” Edwards said. “The team and I are very proud of that achievement."

“The Stadium’s 10th anniversary celebrations this year gave me pause to think about all that we have accomplished so far and what the next ten years hold, both for the Stadium and for me personally. I thought it was time to pass the baton to the next generation to lead the Stadium through its second decade and for me to move onto my next challenge.”

Kerry, who has been in his position since 1998, said he had learnt a lot from Edwards.

“Ken Edwards has put his heart and soul into the Stadium, from the moment the first sod was turned until achieving today’s status as Sydney and Australia’s premier international venue,” Kerry said.

“To have been at Ken’s side since 1998 has been a wonderful privilege in my professional life and it’s a great honour to be asked to take the position of CEO upon his departure. I thank the Board for their confidence.”

Edwards also noted that despite the economic conditions the Stadium’s financial performance continued to be strong and cited the recent confirmation of the AC/DC concerts as further proof of the Stadium’s dominance in the Sydney major event market.

He also attributes this success largely to diversification, and continually adapting to the needs of an ever-changing market.

Other achievements under Edwards’ leadership include:

• Successful $80 million reconfiguration of the Stadium to a fully flexible stadium with rectangular and oval configurations.
• Profitable acquisition and internalisation of the Stadium’s catering business.
• Brokering of innovative corporate partner, sponsorship and signage agreements.
• Recent installation of digital video boards, twice the size of those at the Beijing Olympic Stadium.
• Introduction of transferability and reciprocal rights for the Stadium’s 17,800 memberships.

Commonwealth Bank employees get their hands dirty

Commonwealth Bank of Australia employees recently participated in The Parkland Foundation's inaugural corporate Tree Planting in Badu Mangroves, near Bicentennial Park.

The aim of the project is to provide a sense of ownership and engagement of the local community via environmental plantings throughout the Sydney Olympic Park.  The tree planting is part of an on-going environmental enhancement and community beautification planting schedule with a total of 10,000 plants and species.

Sara Crowe, Community and Sustainability Manager from CBA said, “The tree planting was a really positive experience, I can’t believe that on my doorstep is this amazing opportunity, it was really rewarding and enjoyable I can’t wait to do something like that again.”

If any other corporate companies are interested in attending their very own day in the park, please contact, Bronwyn Rosenberg, Event, PR 9714 7119.

ANZ Stadium unveils new Grow Light Technology

ANZ Stadium recently unveiled its new arena lighting system designed to significantly improve turf growth during the harsh winter months.
Grow Light Technology consists of mobile lighting grids which sit above the playing surface. The inventor, Stadium Grow Lights Concept, is an off shoot of a Dutch company that made its name by growing roses in a controlled environment on a mass scale.

“The combination of high traffic and poor weather during the winter months places enormous strain on any surface,” ANZ Stadium CEO Daryl Kerry said.

“ANZ Stadium made a decision to invest in Grow Light technology to assist maintaining our standing as the premier sports venue in Australia. The technology is proven technology which allows us to provide a world class playing surface all year around and specifically during the demanding winter months.

Grow Light Technology has been successfully adopted by the some of world’s leading stadia including Millennium Stadium, Twickenham Stadium and Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium. The technology is also used by some of the world’s biggest sporting teams at their respective home games such as Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, FC Barcelona, Chelsea FC, Liverpool FC, Olympiakos and PSV Eindhoven.

The use of artificial lighting grids will increase the Stadium’s energy levels only marginally.

'As an environmentally responsible organisation, we are currently exploring ways to offset the greenhouse gas emissions associated with using this technology to ensure we achieve the very best possible environmental outcome.'

Intergenerational Picnic

An intergenerational Picnic was held at Wentworth Common, at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday, 21st March.

Afghan, Turkish, Karen and Iraqi families and young and old alike socialised over breakfast and lunch, providing a rewarding opportunity for young refugees and senior citizens to come together and celebrate Australia’s diversity.

Volunteer opportunities in the Parklands

Are you interested in donating your lunchbreak to a good cause, and take a scenic stroll around Lake Belvedere in Bicentennial Park at the same time?

The Parklands Foundation is seeking volunteers to donate even just half an hour of their time to eradicate salvinia (a noxious floating weed) from Lake Belvedere. Salvinia has been a problem in the Lake over the past two summers.

Whether you can do it once a week or just once, over the next few weeks, all help would be appreciated.  After an initial briefing, you can choose a day and time that suits you. To become involved, please contact Parklands Foundation on 9714 7119 .

FOR THE DIARY

ANZ Stadium to host three AC/DC concerts after ticket sales smash records

Before 9am on Monday 25 May, ANZ Stadium was scheduled to host one AC/DC performance in February 2010. Within 15 minutes and 60,000 tickets later, a second and third show were announced. Within 30 minutes the second was sold out and the third is well on the way.

More than 130,000 tickets were sold by 2pm smashing Australian box office and Ticketek records, with hundreds of fans queuing overnight outside ticket outlets across Sydney to get their hands on the hottest ticket in town.

As part of their Black Ice Tour, ANZ Stadium will host three AC/DC concerts on Thursday 18th (sold-out), Saturday 20th (sold-out) and Monday 22nd (on-sale now).

Promoter Garry Van Egmond said "We are overwhelmed at the ticket sales this morning as fans wrote AC/DC into the record books by smashing all Australian Box Office records! I can't think of a better way to welcome the boys back home."

One of the largest stage productions ever seen will be moved around the country by 48 semi-trailers during February and March 2010.

Italian Festa at The Waterfront

On Saturday June 13, between 10am-5pm, the Italian Festa is a day of fun and activities at the Piazza aimed at promoting all things Italian. It will feature wine tastings, a display of around 50 cars and 30 bikes, live music (piano accordion) and stalls selling Italian produce, gelato and coffee. You will also be able to make your own pizza in a wood-fire oven in the Piazza .

The Waterfront’s two restaurants, ‘Concerto’ and ‘Cucina Visconti’, will offer specials on the day that are prepared with authentic Italian passion. The Waterfront Bocce Club will also be there to play Bocce with you and with their BBQ trailer providing Italian sausages in a roll.

For the kids there will be plenty of activities, including face painting, art workshops and a jumping castle.

The event is The Waterfront’s way of embracing Festa della Repubblica (Italian National Day) which falls on June 5, although celebrations tend to last for the whole month.

“The Piazza offers such an authentic Italian experience that it is perfect for such a celebration,” said resident Luciano Casmiri, who is on The Waterfront’s Italian Festa Committee.

The Waterfront’s 16 completed buildings carry the scene-setting names of  ‘Monaco’, ‘Monte Carlo’, ‘Capri’, ‘Mykonos’, ‘Corfu’, ‘Santorini’, ‘Portofino’, 'Bellagio', ‘Valencia’, ‘Napoli’, ‘Palermo’, ‘Paros’, ‘Napoli’, ‘Torino’, ‘Positano’ and ‘Sorrento’. Mediterranean in architectural inspiration and European in style, these buildings have rendered or bagged masonry facades in a palette of pastel shades, often highlighted with colourful canvas awnings.

The Waterfront sales office, at 21 Bennelong Parkway, Homebush Bay, is open daily from 10am to 4pm. Information is available by calling 1800 333 818 or through the web site: www.thewaterfront.com.au.

SYDNEY 2009 WORLD MASTER GAMES UPDATE

Focus on football and squash

Andy Harper

The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Organising Committee recently announced well known Australian football personality, former National Soccer League striker Andy Harper, as another ambassador for the world’s largest multi-sport event later this year.

Mr Harper made 321 NSL appearances for seven clubs in the football competition that was the predecessor to the A-League before hanging up his soccer boots to embark on a successful career in sports administration, marketing and media.

In 2002, Mr Harper anchored Channel Nine’s coverage of the FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan before winning World Masters Games gold in Melbourne as a member of the Australian Dream team that ruled the men’s 30+ category.

“Taking part in the Melbourne 2002 World Masters Games was one of the best experiences of my life. I’m proud to be associated with the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games and can’t wait for them to kick off,” Mr Harper said.

How “Australia’s worst asthmatic” became a sports champion

'You can control your asthma' – that is the theme of the recent World Asthma Day 2009 and no-one exemplifies the annual asthma awareness day’s aphorism better than Sydney 2009 World Masters Games squash competitor Carin Clonda.

Diagnosed with asthma as a 13-year-old in 1974, her condition so bad at one stage that she had to undergo half-hourly treatment through a mask, Ms Clonda beat the odds to win the 1979 British Junior Open Squash title, at that time effectively the world crown, and be ranked inside the sport’s elite top five during the 1980s.

Once told that she was “Australia’s worst asthmatic”, Ms Clonda received the 2008 Sue Fear Award for Courage and Achievement in Sport in recognition of her grit and determination in overcoming the chronic lung disease to achieve sporting success.

“I’m living proof that you can control your asthma through playing organised sport,” said Ms Clonda, who was one of the four New South Wales Masters Athlete of the Year nominees at the 2008 NSW Sport Federation Annual Sports Awards.

“As the Chief Executive Officer of NSW Squash, I’m enjoying playing a role in the organisation of the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games and I’m looking forward to competing in the 45+ women’s squash singles at them,” Ms Clonda added.

Have you are your colleagues got what it takes to win gold?

There are just two more months in which to register for the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games and they are putting the challenge to you to get involved.

With many venues right here on your doorstep at Sydney Olympic Park, there is no excuse not to take time away from your desk and compete in the world’s biggest multi-sport event.

There are 28 sports are on offer as well as an exciting social program that will ensure you have an unforgettable experience at the Games.

The Opening Ceremony will take place here at ANZ Stadium with a host of stars set to entertain the masses. The Brewery Bar will transform into a hub of activity with competitors from all over the world gathering for some food, drinks and good conversation.
