SOPBiz # 30 - September 2009

From the CEO's Desk

Another AGM is over for 12 months with details of the 2009-2010 Board in the article to follow.

For the information of Park businesses, Rob Abernathy from Football Federation Australia (FFA) was invited to present on Australia's 2018/2022 FIFA World Cup Bid and AFC Asian Cup 2015.These events would have a major economic impact for Australia and hopefully ANZ Stadium and Sydney Olympic Park, with both well placed to met FIFA's strict criteria.

In relation to more day to day activities, our latest advice from Railcorp is that they hope to re-introduce the 10 minute, weekday shuttle service from Lidcombe to the Park in February or March 2010. It is also hoped that within the next six months work will commence on some improvements to the Australia Avenue roundabout to ease the congestion. When more details are available they will be communicated to members though the newsletter and on the website.

It's amazing to look around the Park over the past month to see the ongoing growth. The facade of the Watpac development at 8 Australia Avenue looks less like a construction site and more like a building now, two new eateries have opened in Urban Cafe and Piccolo Roma, the Bulldogs notched up an NRL record club match at ANZ Stadium, a 'Pink' Acer Arena celebrated her last two record breaking Australian concerts for the adopted Aussie and the Billbergia's showroom is now open, with work having already commenced on Australia Towers.

Good luck to the Bulldogs this Saturday night in the NRL 3rd Qualifying Final when they take on the Knights at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
And finally, don't forget that RSVP's for the breakfast on 17 September need to be in by this coming Thursday, 10 September.

OUT 'N ABOUT

ANZ Stadium voted Sydney's top sports venue

ANZ Stadium has been voted Sydney’s top sports venue, according to the Sydney Chamber of Commerce’s annual survey of Sydney’s Favourite Things.

ANZ Stadium polled 49%, compared to 26% for the Sydney Cricket Ground, 13% for Sydney Football Stadium, 8% for Randwick Racecourse and 4% for Parramatta Stadium.

“ANZ Stadium is home to the Bledisloe Cup, State of Origin, NRL Grand Finals and some of the major concerts in Sydney. It works as a venue because of its linkages to transport – car, bus and rail making, and because of its location in the geographic heart of the city. The Stadium also is structured in a way that caters to the needs of the broadest range of market segments – from families to corporates who are seeking four star dining”, said Patricia Forsythe, Executive Director of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce.

ANZ Stadium Managing Director, Daryl Kerry said:
“We are delighted to be voted Sydney’s top sports venue by the Sydney Chamber of Commerce annual survey. While everyone who works here takes great pride in the Stadium and works incredibly hard to reach and maintain high standards, it’s very satisfying to know our customers have a high regard for the place and value the experience of coming here. Our stature as Sydney’s premier international sports and entertainment venue is certainly enhanced by this survey result.”

Donate to Wesley Mission Christmas collections in October

Want to provide someone with an early Christmas present this year?

Every year, thousands of people rely on the Wesley Mission to feed their families with the need often at its highest during Christmas when some families also struggle to provide just one present for their children. And this year is no different.

Each year, Scouts Australia NSW Rovers provide the Wesley Mission with enough non-perishable food items to distribute to families during Christmas and all year round. They aim to collect 10,000 items for Wesley Mission, but they need your help - canned food, pasta and soups or hygiene items work best.

Rovers will pick up donations in late October (so please call when you have items for them to collect).

The state-wide collection will be delivered to the Wesley Mission by NSW Rovers on Saturday November 7th.Every little bit helps and you can rest assured your donation will be put to good use.

On 21 November this year the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with a gala black tie dinner.  Established in 1984 as the State Sports Centre, the site has been a great supporter of international, national and state sporting events, an excellent facility for training and a great venue for concerts and other commercial activities.  More recently home to the NSW Swifts and the West Sydney Razorbacks, it was the original sporting venue in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct, and is justly proud of this heritage.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

What's new at Raw Cafe and Espresso Bar

Raw Cafe and Espresso Bar recently completed a review of its operation in Sydney Olympic Park resulting in a number of changes to improve both their service and food offerings.

And direct from the owners themselves Rosemary and Dominic Romeo, "If quality food with flavours that tantalise your taste buds are your thing, then the all new Raw must be on your hit list of places to visit. Speed of service both dine-in & take-away is a lot quicker for those on the run. The installation of much needed new kitchen equipment & the addition of extra team members ensures that Raw also aims to deliver fast, efficient service. And we have a new Head Chef."

Some of the changes include:

Lunch period extended from 2:30pm to 3.00pm.
•New Barista & a couple of new faces behind the counter
•New Head Chef, Daniel, (pictured) who has been brought over from Glasshouse Restaurant & Bar (another establishment owned by the team). Daniel has won many awards & believes that fresh & simple is the key to a successful menu.
•New dine-in breakfast menu. And in Domenic's words," I can honestly say that it has to be the best breaky in Sydney Olympic Park with creamy scrambled eggs served on thick Italian toast, to home made potato hash browns and buttermilk pancakes that melt in your mouth."
•New dine-in lunch menu. And whilst prices have increased, lunch is still affordable. Wraps & rolls from $9.5, Calamari @ $12, Burgers from $14 to grilled Flat head fillets @ $18.
•New daily selection of pastas, salads & hot dishes from the take away bar. Our famous home made chicken schnitzel is as moist and tender as ever.
•Food from the grill to take away remains the same – quality food, cheap prices.

So do yourself a favour (and flavour) and check out the new improved Raw in the Commonwealth Bank building, 10 Dawn Fraser Avenue. Telephone  9746 3690. Menus are available in the attached pdf including corporate catering options.

WORLD MASTERS GAMES UPDATE

The family that swims together....

Six fortysomething brothers have teamed up – literally – to provide their sport-crazy 77-year-old Melbourne dad with the Fathers Day gift of his dreams this year.

Greg, Glenn, Joel, Brett, Paul and Anthony Smith have registered to swim alongside their persistent pop, Don, at the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games next month.

Don, who made his first overseas trip at the age of 73 to compete in the Edmonton 2005 World Masters Games, spent four years persuading his six sons to join him on the blocks for the seventh edition of the world’s largest multi-sport event.

All except Don’s eldest son, 48-year-old Sydney resident Greg, swam at this year’s Australian Masters Games in Geelong. But Greg, the only one of the Smith clan who does not live in Melbourne, is on deck for the 10-18 October Games at which more than 28,000 competitors will celebrate being fit, fun and forever young.

The seven Smith men will contest the 50 metres freestyle at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Friday 16 October, day seven of the nine-day international multi-sport event that has attracted a record entry from more than 100 countries.

Swimming is one of the 28 sports on the Games program, with the pool events at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre running 10-16 October and the three-kilometre open water swim at Chowder Bay occurring on Saturday 17 October.

And the Smith family are in good company with more than 200 Olympians, including competitors from each of the 17 summer events dating back to Berlin in 1936, amongst the record-breaking entries for the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games.

Between them the Olympians registered as Games competitors have won 48 Olympic medals - 15 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze. They range in age from 29 to 90 and hail from all over the world.
