SOPBiz #33 December 2009

FROM THE CEO's DESK

V8 Supercars
Sydney Olympic Park easily accomodated the 184,856 race-goers, with praise for the park as a major event precinct coming from all quarters. The 'jewel in the crown of the V8 calendar' is one comment I particularly like or the other more humourous quote from driver Craig Lowndes who called the event, 'the Royal Easter Show on steroids.'

From the moment the  government made the decision to support the race, it's been all about putting aside personal viewpoints to make it the best race on the calendar and this seems to have been achieved.

Perhaps December 4-6 will now go down as a real coming of age for the Park with unilateral praise from politicians and patrons alike. Thanks specifically to V8 Supercars Australia for the tickets it made available to members as a thank you for the inconvenience experienced during the bump-in time in particular and to Chris Bastic at Homebush Motor Racing Authority for the regular updates.

Debriefs are still to take place, but what a great end to the year.

General Meeting and Christmas drinks
On 19 November, Senior Eonomist from the Commonwealth Bank and media commentator, Craig James (pictured), addressed Business Association members at The Pullman. His presentation looked at the 'GFC' and why Australia wasn't as badly impacted as other countries. He then looked at the year ahead for business. Many thanks to the CBA for making Craig available given his busy work and media schedule.

All the remain to say is on behalf of the Board of Sydney Olympic Park Business Association, I would like to wish you all a very happy and safe festive season.

NB: SOPBiz returns on the first of February. You can still send me information in the meantime which can be ditributed to members in the form of an eblast and/or placed on the website.

OUT 'N ABOUT

Acer Arena packs a punch

Australian heavyweights of the sporting, corporate and social world were ringside on December 2 when Acer Arena hosted one of the biggest fight nights in Australia's history.

Against the odds and stunning the hyped capacity crowd, Danny Green the three time World Champion retained his IBO World Title within the opening minutes of the bout against the legendary Roy Jones Jnr.

But there's plenty more on the card at Acer Arena with Fleetwood Mac performing tonight and tomorrow night. And the Green theme continues with the 21st Century Breakdown Australian Tour of Green Day on the 11 and 12 December forcast to be yet another landmark event.

Purple Patch for ANZ Stadium

The plaudits continued to come ANZ Stadium's way in November with the venue recognised by both Sydney Water and Tourism NSW. These awards complete a hat trick of awards for the Stadium which was voted the city’s top sports venue by the Sydney Chamber of Commerce in August.

ANZ Stadium’s green credentials were bolstered at the recent Sydney Water’s annual 'Every Drop Counts' Business Awards function. ANZ Stadium snared the Largest Volume Reduction Award for reducing water consumption by an average of 230,000 litres a day. Days later, ANZ Stadium landed Bronze at the 2009 NSW Tourism Awards.

Nominated for the coveted Major Tourist Attraction award, ANZ Stadium was pipped by Doonside’s Featherdale Wildlife Park, but recognised for demonstrating outstanding achievements throughout the year.

“It’s an honour to be recognised for the work we do and these awards for tourism and the environment show the Stadium is much more than a sports venue,” ANZ Stadium Managing Director and CEO Daryl Kerry said.

Whilst many Park employees in the Park are still unaware that there is a hairdresser in Dawn Fraser Avenue, on the plus side they are getting return business from their new customers.

‘It’s been hard to get people to come down our end of Dawn Fraser Avenue, but hopefully when all the retail space is leased there will be more passing traffic,” said co-owner and Director Tony Hancock.

Whilst wife Leah is the head stylist, Tony describes himself as a more traditional ‘barber’ for his male clients.

Their decision to move to the park was three-fold. SPORTS CENTRE

Sports Centre celebrates 25 years and welcomes new inductees

On 21 November  the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre celebrated its 25th anniversary with a gala black tie dinner.

Established in 1984 as the State Sports Centre, the site has been a great supporter of international, national and state sporting events, an excellent facility for training and a great venue for concerts and other commercial activities.

More recently home to the NSW Swifts and the West Sydney Razorbacks, it was the original sporting venue in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct, and is justly proud of this heritage.

The highlight of the evening was the induction of five new sportspeople into the NSW Hall of Champions, the sporting hall of fame housed at the Centre.  The five new inductees are:

•Glenn McGrath AM Cricket
•Liz Ellis AM Netball
•Dennis Carroll Australian Rules Football
•David Hall OAM Wheelchair Sports – Tennis
•Ingo Renner OAM Gliding

Two new sporting Legends inducted

Louise Sauvage OAM (Wheelchair Sports – Athletics) and Ken Rosewall MBE (Tennis) were also honoured on the night by induction into the recently formed Hall of Legends. Both sporting legends were able to attend on the night and accept their award in person.

Farewell to Peter Ross

On Monday November 30, the State Sports Centre Trust Act was repealed and responsibility for the management of the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, Hockey Centre and Sports Halls was transferred to the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA).  This marks the end of 25 years of the State Sports Centre Trust, although it is certainly not the end of the venues.

Peter Ross, Director of the Trust for 10 years, felt that this was an appropriate time for him to move on.

He is taking a couple of months off to recharge the batteries, catch a few waves and think about the future. After this sojourn he will be looking around for new opportunities, within the venue industry or elsewhere.

From everyone in the Park, we wish Peter the best of luck in his next venture and all the best to Ross Coggan who adds the Sports Centre to the stable of venues he oversees.

Friendly Facilities get the Thumbs Up

On Thursday the 26 November the State Sports Centre was the venue of choice for 'Get DIS Party Started', a dance party to promote the rights of people with disability who require a companion, to fair ticketing at events and venues. This event was an enjoyable and a well received component of the Don't DIS my ABILITY campaign in the lead up to International Day of People with Disability on Thursday 3 December.

On 3 December every year International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is celebrated worldwide recognising the achievements and contributions of people with disability.
