UPCOMING EVENTS
First networking event for 2010
In September 2009 Minister Borger formally launched Master Plan 2030, along with officially announcing ‘Sydney Olympic Park’ as Sydney’s newest suburb.
Five months on and the Watpac development at 8 Australia Avenue has been completed, Fujitsu and Watpac have taken up residency in the building and Silex Solar has moved into the former BP Solar building. In addition, the Park has staged its first V8 Supercars race, along with a myriad of other major events, the Novotel has been refurbished and three or four new retail outlets are about to open.
If this is a snapshot of the past five months only, what can we expect to see in the next five years?
Alan Marsh, the CEO of Sydney Olympic Park Authority has kindly agreed to address Business Association members and outline the likely developments for the Park in this period. This is the first networking function of the year and a good opportunity to touch base with your Park colleagues and find out what’s happening beyond your front door. The function is open for all members to attend free of charge. However bookings are essential by 19 March.

AC/DC farewell Sydney in record-breaking fashion
The proof is in the sales – AC/DC are improving with age.
The iconic Australian rock band wrapped up the Sydney leg of their Black Ice World Tour last Monday night, but not before smashing a few records. The three-concert aggregate was 213,045 making ANZ Stadium the biggest stopover for any AC/DC tour. The figure was also a venue record, surpassing U2’s 2006 Vertigo Tour which lured 211,747 to ANZ Stadium across three concerts.
Completing the hat trick, Saturday night’s 75,867 fans combined to record the biggest ever crowd at an AC/DC concert.
“We were expecting big crowds for AC/DC's Sydney homecoming but the numbers that have flocked to ANZ Stadium have blown us away,” he said Promoter Garry Van Egmond.
“The atmosphere was spectacular and ANZ Stadium should be congratulated for helping deliver three amazing shows.
ANZ Stadium Managing Director and CEO Daryl Kerry said: “The AC/DC Black Ice World Tour will be remembered as one of the most successful, not to mention memorable, chapters in ANZ Stadium history.
.....“One review described ANZ Stadium as a cathedral of rock ‘n’ roll and that just about sums up the three amazing nights.
Foundations underway for Australia Towers
Billbergia has exchanged contracts on 75% of the units in Tower 1 of Australia Towers, the Park's first residential development, with only 20% of stock remaining. Designs are currently being finalised for Tower 2. Pictured - Getting down and dirty as the foundations are dug for Australia Towers in Australia Avenue.
Charity Shield
Rugby league made a triumphant return to ANZ Stadium on Saturday night with a record 27,221 fans turning out to catch the 27th annual Charity Shield.
They were all privy to an exciting show but not a victory with the South Sydney Rabbitohs and St George Illawarra Dragons playing out a 26-all draw.
Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward had a post-siren chance to claim victory after winger Brett Morris grabbed an eleventh hour try but his sideline conversion swayed right. The Rabbitohs therefore retained the Shield for the third consecutive year.

Golf Centre and Special Olympics Tee Up
On 20 January the Business Association sent out an eblast on behalf of one of its Members, Special Olympics NSW, who was looking for some pro-bono office space for a minimum period of 12 months to house its State Manager and volunteers. I'm pleased to advise that the Sydney Olympic Park Golf Centre has gone to the top of the leaderboard with their generous offer.
‘The Sydney Olympic Park Golf Centre is privileged to be associated with Special Olympics NSW and we believe that the mere association and excellent reputations of both organisations will benefit each other.’said Golf Centre Manager Kathy Symons.
‘I’m confident that I also speak on behalf of Gary Sillett (Special Olympics) when I say thank you to the Business Association for facilitating this opportunity for our two organisations.’
In Australia some 4,500 athletes are actively involved in 14 sports. These sports are delivered by over 1,000 Spcial Olympics volunteers operating in almost 50 regions across the country.
"It's great to see members working together. The Golf Centre has shown itself to be a good neighbour with this generous offer. And being able to facilitate this arrangement and enhance a sense of community within the Park business community is very rewarding. A win-win for all concerned!
